Indianapolis Motor Speedway has announced that the Oscar Meyer Wienie 500 will return this year for a second event supporting the Indianapolis 500.
The unique event brings all six existing Wienermobile vehicles to the same location to put on a show for fans.
Rather than just being on display, the hot dog-shaped vehicles put on a full featured event for fans.
It starts with driver introductions while standing on the famous yard of bricks, and concludes with a full race consisting of two laps around the 2.5-mile oval.
Due to the size and relative lack of safety of the vehicles, the race is more of a choreographed affair rather than actual competition. But the response from fans for last year’s inaugural running was still largely positive.
“The response to the first Wienie 500 was overwhelming, and we heard the fans loud and clear that they were hungry for more,” said Kelsey Rice, brand communications director at Oscar Mayer.
“This year, we’re supercharging the experience, delivering an even bigger, bolder and more unforgettable event that puts the fans at the forefront.
“With amplified engagement, intensified rivalries and more surprises in store, we’re giving the people what they want – an unparalleled live experience that will leave them craving more.”
Last year’s event, which was held shortly after IndyCar was on track for Carb Day practice, had over 85,000 fans watching in person and eight million more watching online.
This year’s event will be covered on television as well, helping grow the audience for the unique spectacle.
Fans are also able to vote for which flavor of hot dog is to replace the Sonoran Dog vehicle, which finished at the back last year.
The Wienie 500 will be run on Friday, May 22, shortly after the traditional Carb Day practice session.
