‘F1 The Movie’ has received four nominations for this year’s Academy Awards [the Oscars], including the prestigious ‘Best Picture’ gong.
The film, starring Brad Pitt as enigmatic veteran racing driver Sonny Hayes, was released in the summer of 2025, and has been slated as the highest-grossing sports film of all-time.
With cinematography taking inspiration from the 1966 picture Grand Prix, the F1 movie was also able boast Lewis Hamilton as one of its producers.
Telling the tale of Hayes’ unlikely hiring by the fictional APX GP team, the American returns to F1, decades after a career-altering crash, which was based upon the real life accident of Martin Donnelly at the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix.
Hayes is immediately placed in a testy intra-team environment, including a rivalry with promising rookie driver Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris.
Pitt and Idris were given rigorous training to prepare for the role, and Pitt’s ability behind the wheel enabled him to be handed a test at COTA by McLaren around the time of release.
The film sees a plethora of cameos by various drivers, including Hamilton, as well as Team Principals and Sky commentary duo Martin Brundle and David Croft.
Alongside the prestigious nomination, the other categories in which the film could score a gong are Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.
The 98th instalment of the Academy Awards will be held on March 15 in Los Angeles.
