Williams raises rumour behind Mercedes 2026 dominance fears

Mercedes has been tipped to have a dominant engine in 2026

James Vowles has cooled predictions of Mercedes dominance ahead of Formula 1‘s rules changes in 2026, suggesting “no one knows” how the teams will stack up.

Mercedes aced the last wholesale power unit overhaul in 2014 and has continued to produce among the benchmark engines since.

The 2026 changes split the power units 50-50 between combustion and electrical power, while the FIA has axed the MGU-H component.

Based on the precedent that was established in 2014, the widespread expectation is that the Brackley-based team will be on top in 2026.

However, the Williams boss has claimed that other manufacturers are fueling these predictions in an attempt to push through revisions to the regulations.

“No one knows, no one of any engine manufacturer knows where they’re going to fall out,” Vowles told media including Motorsport Week.

“Part of the speculation that appeared was one team and PU manufacturer trying to create a narrative to get some changes, to be completely clear.

“But no one really knows. I strongly doubt Ferrari has done a poor job; they are very good at getting this right year on year.

“Honda this year has produced a benchmark engine. So I don’t think it’s going to be like 2014 where you have such a runaway that you can have all the teams carried with it.

“Mercedes, we’ve been working specifically on 2026 with them since early 2024 when we signed the agreement.

“What I can say is they’ve done good preparation. Let’s see what that translates to.”

Williams admits breaking into top three a long shot in 2026

Powered by Mercedes since 2014, Williams is hoping to continue its improvement since Vowles took over in 2023.

The team had suffered through some difficult years, but fifth in 2025’s Constructors’ Championship marked its best result since 2017.

2014’s introduction of the turbo-hybrid era saw Williams claim back-to-back third-place finishes. A similar new engine bounce would achieve a finish that Vowles concedes may be slightly above its reach.

“In terms of our aspirations, top three again would be above what we’re expecting,” he added.

“I’ve made the comment and I mean it – stepping forward year on year is a sensible goal for us. Top three would be aspirational.”
