Adrian Newey has been announced as Team Principal of Aston Martin, effective from next year’s Formula 1 season, in a total shake-up of the team’s leadership.
The famed British design guru will take charge of the Silverstone-based squad alongside his role in leading the technical division.
Newey will replace current Team Principal Andy Cowell, who will be resuffled into the role of Chief Strategy Officer.
The announcement comes after several days of speculation, which began with rumours that Newey’s former Red Bull colleague Christian Horner was one of several candidates to replace Cowell.
“Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” Newey said.
“I’m looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026, where we will face an entirely new position with Aston Martin now a works team combined with the considerable challenge faced by the new regulations.
“Andy’s new role, focusing on the integration of the new PU with our three key partners, will be pivotal in this journey.”

2026 will see Newey’s first creation as designer for Aston take shape, amid the sport’s transition to a new set of technical regulations.
Cowell indicated that the change comes at “an appropriate time,” given that Aston is effectively becoming its own works team, as it will share an exclusive partnership with power unit supplier Honda
“Having implemented much needed structural changes as we transition to a full works team and set the foundations for Adrian and the wider organisation, it is an appropriate time for me to take a different role as chief strategy officer,” he said.
“In this role, I will help to optimise the technical partnership between the team, Honda, Aramco and Valvoline and to ensure the seamless integration of the team’s new PU, fuel and chassis.”
