Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has revealed chairman John Elkann’s public support was a message to “external targets” about the reports concerning the Formula 1 team.
The Italian marque has had to combat perpetual speculation during 2025 amid an underwhelming campaign that is threatening to conclude without a single race win.
Ferrari had moved to shut down the rumours that had gathered surrounding Vasseur’s position at the helm with a new multi-year contract that was announced in July.
However, a tough run since the summer break caused reports to arise that Elkann had met with ex-Red Bull boss Christian Horner to discuss a possible role at Ferrari.
Speaking at an event in Washington during the United States Grand Prix weekend, though, Elkann reiterated his trust in Vasseur to reverse Ferrari’s prospects on track.
“I want to express our full confidence in our team principal, Fred Vasseur, and in the work he is carrying out together with all our colleagues at Scuderia Ferrari – the mechanics, engineers, and drivers competing this weekend in Austin,” Elkann expressed.
“I also want to reaffirm the importance of teamwork by everyone to maintain focus on the only goal that matters: always giving our very best on the track.”

Vasseur content with Ferrari response to rumours
Vasseur has asserted that Elkann’s decision to go public with his backing towards the Frenchman came with the intention to silence the external noise around Ferrari.
“For everybody it’s good to have this kind of message,” Vasseur, who oversaw the team’s return to the podium in Austin, told media including Motorsport Week.
“But as we have a permanent contact, we already had the message, that it was more for the third party and external target.
“It’s important because, like this, you stop the discussion and you are focused on the next one and not to reply to all the questions about this.”
