Haas is only one of two teams with upgrades brought to this weekend’s Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, with a raft of changes for its home race.
The American squad has been able to arrive at the Circuit of the Americas with five changes to its VF-25, three of which are focused on the floor.
Its body, edges and fences are all tweaked, with an additional tweak to the rear corner as a consequence.
Per the FIA’s document with the full upgrades list, the update is an extension of the one it brought to the British Grand Prix in July, “by refining the floor fences and outboard edge to increase aerodynamic load, with a focus on high-speed corner performance.”
To give the change more context, Haas boss Ayao Komatsu explained to media including Motorsport Week that the changes are to improve drivability and flexibility.
“You improve the overall performance and the drivability and stability; the package that gives more predictability gives the driver more confidence – that means better drivability,” he said.
“The Silverstone package direction [with a new floor then] confirmed to us how we should be developing the car, and in theory, this is another extension of the step we did in Silverstone. It was more predictable, more consistent.
“In a way, [the new upgrade] should open up the set-up opportunities, because certain things, it was limiting us to set up the car in certain directions.”
There is also a fifth change, with a revised sidepod inlet, in the shape of a new mirror stay.
Mercedes, fresh off the back of a dominant win in Singapore, brings one small change, a reprofiled upper lip and reduced span winglets to increase local load.
