Williams is confident that Alex Albon will be free to take part in FP2 for the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix after a dramatic pitlane fire in FP1.

The Anglo-Thai driver was only two exploration laps down at the Marina Bay Circuit when he reported the fire to his team, and quickly entered the pits.

His FW47’s rear brakes were alight with smoke pouring from the back of the car. Albon initially remained in the car with smoke blowing towards his face, before jumping out.

It was a difficult start to the weekend for the Grove-based squad, having arrived off the back of its first podium in four years in Baku, when Carlos Sainz finished in third place.

The Spaniard recovered the session for the team by going eighth fastest, just shy of seven tenths off the quickest time set by Fernando Alonso.

Williams has said it is hopeful that it will remedy the problem in time for Albon to partake in the early evening session.

“Alex has experienced a rear brake hardware problem which we are investigating,” a statement read.

“He will not join the remainder of FP1 but we are confident we can resolve the issue for FP2.”
