Ex-F1 driver delivers brutal takedown of ‘spoiled child’ Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton has been labelled a “spoiled child” who only wins races when he is in the best car, by former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer.

Hamilton has been stung by an uncompetitive and problem-laden SF-25 car in his first season as a Ferrari driver.

His China Sprint Race success excepted, Hamilton has struggled to extract a great deal of performance or positivity from the car, often describing it as “alien” to him.

The Brit is yet to score a full Grand Prix podium yet, as the Scuderia is now focusing on its 2026 car, as F1 prepares to switch to a new radical rulebook.

Surer, who drove for teams including Arrows and Brabham, scoring 17 points in a seven-year career, was frank in his assessment of the seven-time World Champion.

“Lewis Hamilton is simply a spoiled child who has always driven the best cars. If the car suits him, he wins hands down,” he told Austrian magazine Vollgas.

“But as soon as he doesn’t have the fastest car, he runs into problems.”

The Swiss drew comparisons with Fernando Alonso, who he noted performs admirably despite the handicap of a difficult car.

“He [Hamilton] is not like Alonso, who can live with compromises and gets the most out of every car,” he said.

“I did not expect that. I thought he would still shine in the races thanks to his experience. But that is not happening.

Surer observed having previously struggled to match former team-mate George Russell at Mercedes, and hinted that now being partnered with Charles Leclerc would be a similar problem.

“On the other hand, he already struggled over the past two years alongside George Russell. At Ferrari, he now has an extremely fast team-mate in Charles Leclerc.”
