Lewis Hamilton has crashed out of the 2025 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix as his race comes to a premature end at Zandvoort.
The seven-time World Champion was engaged in a battle with George Russell for sixth place on Lap 23 when he ran wide at Turn 3 and lost control of his Ferrari, causing him to hit the barriers as he attempted to recover back onto the track.
The incident prompted a Safety Car period, significantly affecting his team-mate Charles Leclerc, who pitted the lap before onto the Hard tyre. Once everyone else had pitted, Leclerc returned to sixth place behind Russell and Isack Hadjar still.
Having started from seventh on the grid after a promising qualifying performance, his retirement marks another disappointing outing as the British driver has now failed to score points in the last two races.
His race engineer Riccardo Adami immeditley asked if he was ok, to which Hamilton replied: “Yeah, I’m so sorry guys.”
It marked Hamilton’s first retirement with Ferrari and his first DNF in F1 since the 2024 United States Grand Prix. Meanwhile, his team-mate Leclerc managed to overtake Russell after the restart, though not without controversy, as he muscled his way through at Turns 11 and 12.
Russell sustained damage in the clash, and the stewards have confirmed the incident will be investigated after the race.
