Ferrari will run its long-awaited rear suspension upgrade at a test session held at Mugello this week, ahead of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will jump aboard the SF-25 at the Italian circuit for a commercial filming day on Wednesday, in which it will be allocated 200 km of track time.
The Scuderia will be hopeful that this upgrade will help further building on from its floor upgrades that it brought to the Austrian Grand Prix, in which Leclerc and Hamilton finished third and fourth respectively.
Changes in the rear suspension comes mostly from the front upper arm, and the redesign has meant reconfiguring the front of its upper wishbone section.
This has meant a new attachment point around the gearbox, in such a way as to not disturb the way the car throughout period of heavy loading.
Simulator testing has so far proved positive, and the test will be an indication of if the current optimism within Maranello is well-founded.
If so, then Ferrari is more than likely to see a significant improvement of the car, which could be worth around a tenth of a second.
It may also enable the car to be sufficiently set-up for wet weather conditions, which plagued its progress at the British Grand Prix, after a promising showing in qualifying in the dry.
The timing of the test will give engineers back at Maranello enough time to look over the data from Mugello before it send the SF-25 to Spa-Francorchamps.
If the upgrades are successful, then it should help the SF-25 steer Leclerc and Hamilton to a damage limitation job on the 2025 season.
With McLaren set to conquer both titles, leading the Constructors’ Championship by 238 points, an improved car could see Ferrari cement second place for the second successive season, as it soon looks towards its 2026 challenger.
