Kyffin Simpson is competing in his sophomore year in the NTT IndyCar Series, and he is making improvements nearly every week.
Last year’s full rookie season with Chip Ganassi Racing saw him finish outside the top 10 in every single event and ended 21st in the points.
This year, however, the 20-year-old is has logged four top 10s, including one top five, and appears to have gained a lot of confidence from last season.
Talking with Motorsportweek.com, Simpson revealed that he could have easily earned a podium in Mid-Ohio and he is now feeling comfortable everywhere he goes.
“It’s been very good,” said Simpson of this season. “We were really strong at Mid-Ohio.
“Realistically, making those strategy calls we could have won the race without the couple mistakes we had. Even with the off we had early on, we could have been on the podium.
“It was difficult to come away with only 10th, but I know that I would have been really happy with a 10th place early in the season. I’m super happy about it, and hoping to keep that progression going and have some stronger races later this season.
“I think everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve been the most comfortable [I’ve ever been]. Mid-Ohio, Road America, the test here [in Iowa] a couple weeks ago I felt the most comfortable I’ve ever felt on an oval.
“I am working with a new engineer this year, that’s been great. Trying to work together better and we’ve been doing great work. It’s been a good season.”
Simpson currently sits 15th in the points standings, and has nearly eclipsed his points total from last season with roughly one third of the season remaining.
