The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has been given an FIA Grade 1 status, boosting the possibility of Formula 1 returning to South Africa.
Kyalami, which hosted the South African Grand Prix between 1967 and ’85, as well as in 1992 and 93 on a new configuration, has been keen to make a comeback on the calendar, along with the nation as a whole.
The circuit’s wish to be granted a bigger opportunity to host an F1 race in the future has now been granted, to the delight of its owner, Toby Venter.
“This is a defining moment for South African motorsport,” he said.
“When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it, not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent.
“The FIA’s acceptance of our Grade 1 design is a major step forward in that journey.”
Kyalami now has three years to complete the works that guarantee this status, which is said to be revolving around barrier fencing, kerbs, drainage and run-off area.
“This is a light-touch upgrade in engineering terms, but one that enhances the already excellent circuit standards to meet modern Grade 1 requirements,” said Clive Bowen, founder of the Apex Circuit Design company, which is in charge of the work.

Kyalami to still face stiff competition
Despite the understandable happiness from Kyalami, there is still no assurance it will be chosen to host a Grand Prix if South Africa is afforded a coveted space on the calendar.
The statement that announced the successful grade said “selected works will be actioned pending the successful outcome of South Africa’s place on the F1 calendar and Kyalami being selected as the preferred hosting venue.”
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC)’s Formula 1 Bid Steering Committee published a document earlier in the year in order to entice potential promoters for a race in the country.
It is said that Kyalami’s biggest opposition would be a street circuit in Cape Town, which, to some extent, would potentially follow the layout used by Formula E.
