Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has suggested that speculation regarding his future with the team is holding back its progress amid a tricky start to the Formula 1 season.
The Italian marque has endured a tough first nine races of the season, with Charles Leclerc’s three podium finishes the best it has shown so far.
Despite being second in the Constructors’ Championship, the Maranello-based squad is currently 197 points behind reigning champions and leaders McLaren.
Ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, Vasseur blasted press speculation as to whether the Ferrari hierarchy will relieve him of his position should results not improve.
During the same press conference, Vasseur was asked how it felt to be publicly backed by both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, and responded by suggesting that media intrusion into his future is causing harm to the team.
“I can understand their reaction because we are working on it day per day,” Vasseur told media including Motorsport Week.
“We are working to reach a target and we are working all together. It’s not about me. Again, I think I knew before. I knew perfectly that I’m exposed.
“The issue is not the Team Principal, that’s because we are fully aware.
“I think the issue in this kind of situation is more the people of the team. And this is affecting me much more than my own position. You know what I mean?
“At one stage, we have to consider that the people who are in every single team of the grid, they are working all very hard. They are putting all of their energy. Sometimes they are doing some sacrifice for the family and so on, and to put names like this on the paper, I think it’s very, very harsh.
“You have to understand that when a journalist is saying that Ferrari will recruit this name for this position, there is someone who is in this position.
“And Sunday evening, the guy says, ‘OK, tomorrow morning I won’t have a job anymore because what is in the newspaper is true that I will have someone in my position.’
“And it’s the same for all the groups working for the guy, and we are in this situation on a daily basis now in Italy, and too much is too much.
“Honestly, if they want to be successful at one stage, we also have to be able to work in a clean environment. And we are not in this situation so far.”

Will Ferrari’s chances of success be better served by a long-term process?
Vasseur is Ferrari’s fourth team boss since it scored its last World Championship of any kind – the Constructors’ title in 2008, under the stewardship of F1’s current CEO, Stefano Domenicali.
Its most successful period in F1 came between 2000 and 2004, when Michael Schumacher scored five successive Drivers’ titles, as well as winning the Constructors’ crown every single year, adding to the one it won in 1999.
This glorious time in the team’s F1 story was overseen by Jean Todt, who helped Ferrari become a formidable force, with Schumacher leading the charge on the track.
However, it was not always plain sailing for Vasseur’s countryman. Todt had taken over the team in 1993, becoming its fourth boss in as many years, after a period in which it had not won a race since 1990.
Todt was allowed time to turn the team’s fortunes around and eventually did so, a fact that might be used by those who believe that Vasseur is the right man for the job.
It’s a theory shared by the team’s former driver Carlos Sainz, who told media including Motorsport Week that media “finger-pointing” was counterproductive and reiterated his own beliefs that a “process” is required for a team to become successful.
If Vasseur can convince his Maranello paymasters that he is indeed worthy of their long-term backing, then Ferrari could place itself upon a springboard from which it can leap to success.
But with the rumour mill continuously generating, it is hard to know if Vasseur will be afforded that much more time.
