McLaren driver Lando Norris has revealed he’s stepped away from social media in recent weeks, calling it a “waste of time and energy” ahead of the Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.
The British driver boasts nearly 10 million followers on Instagram and 2.8 million on X, but at Imola, he explained that he’s recently stopped scrolling on the apps to spend more time on things he finds more meaningful outside of F1.
His comments were made after Lewis Hamilton recently unfollowed everyone on Instagram, a move he also did straight after the controversial Abu Dhabi 2021 finale.
“Yeah, I’ve not been on social media for a few weeks now,” Norris said.
“It’s just not something I enjoy – I don’t need to, it’s my life, I can do what I like.
“I enjoy not going on my phone as much as I used to.
“I mean, I still use my phone and I am still texting my friends, all these things.
“But I just see social media, from my perspective, more of a waste of my time and energy, and I just don’t need that, don’t want it.
“I don’t find it interesting – I wouldn’t say I feel better, I just feel like I have got more time to do things that I want to do.
“I want to spend time with my friends and go and play golf and train and do things that are productive.
“Lewis can do what he wants – good for him.”
Norris is currently embroiled in a title fight with his McLaren team-mate, Oscar Piastri, and the reigning World Champion, Max Verstappen.
The 25-year-old fell short of his goal of securing a maiden F1 title in 2024, losing out to the dominant Dutchman.
