Oscar Piastri went quickest in FP2

Oscar Piastri was fastest once again as he headed-up a McLaren 1-2 in FP2 for Formula 1‘s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

The Australian’s 1:15.293s was enough to place him at the top of the timesheets, just 0.025s ahead of team-mate Lando Norris.

McLaren, who already hold a huge lead in the Constructors’ Championship and Piastri leading Drivers’ too, appear to have the ascendancy around the Imola circuit.

Alpine was able to put its tumultuous last two weeks to one side, with Pierre Gasly going third fastest with a 1:15.569s.

George Russell was fourth for Mercedes, with Max Verstappen fifth, the Red Bull just under half-a-second adrift of Piastri’s time.

In front of its home fans, Ferrari struggled again, with Charles Leclerc sixth, and Lewis Hamilton down in 11th, the Brit placing two wheels on the gravel on the exit of Variante Alta early in the hour.

The Imola circuit was bathed in glorious sunshine

The session largely went without incident, but was briefly red-flagged with around five minutes to go after Isack Hadjar spun into the wall at Tamburello, picking-up what appeared to be minor damage to his Racing Bulls.

It had, apart from this, a positive afternoon for the French rookie, who ended the day seventh, ahead of the second Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda.

Franco Colapinto ended the session 13th, in his first F1 weekend for Alpine, overcoming an early incident in which he baulked the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, who was on a quick lap.

It was a mixed day for Haas, with Esteban Ocon rooted to the foot of the order, with Oliver Bearman 12th, clocking a 1:16.009s, four tenths quicker than his team-mate.

Sauber’s promising start to the day was unfortunately not repeated, with Nico Hulkenberg down in 19th, two places down on Gabriel Bortoleto.

However, the good news for the Swiss outfit was that the Brazilian’s car was able to run, having been repaired after crashing in the first run of the afternoon.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, racing before a partisan crowd for the very first time, was down in 18th.
