Max Verstappen and McLaren have both been recognised for their Formula 1 successes in 2024 with nominations at this year’s upcoming Laureus World Sports Awards.
Verstappen, who retained his Drivers’ Championship for the fourth consecutive season, is in the running for Sportsman of the Year.
The Dutchman reclaimed the crown in Las Vegas after a season in which his Red Bull team were, for the majority, unable to produce the fastest car.
However, Verstappen’s guile and often unmatched form saw him come through on top, which included a stunning win from 17th on the grid during a wet race in Brazil.
Verstappen will be hopeful of winning the award for the second time, having first claimed it in 2022.
The Dutchman became the fourth F1 driver to have been a winner of the award, joining Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
His 2024 world title victory saw him saw him run close by McLaren, which was able to make use of its strong package to give both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri maiden F1 wins, who between them amassed six wins to clinch its first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years.
The achievement has seen the Woking outfit nominated for the World Team of the Year gong, hoping to become the third F1 team in the awards’ history to claim this particular prize, following Renault in 2006, Brawn GP in 2009 and Mercedes in 2018.
In a statement, McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown said: “2024 was a fantastic year for the entire team.
“We achieved so much on and off track, with six Grand Prix wins, 21 podiums and two Sprint wins, leading us to achieve the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship title.
“Our first team title since 1998 could not have been achieved without Lando, Oscar and the whole team in Woking working continually in the pursuit of getting us back to the front of the grid.
“It’s an honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award and to be recognised for the incredible work of all the men and women at the McLaren Formula 1 Team.”
The 25th instalment of the awards will take place in Madrid on April 20 and 21.
