Red Bull admits McLaren mid-season improvement in 2024 came as a ‘surprise’

Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Wache has admitted the mid-season improvement that propelled McLaren above the team in Formula 1 in 2024 came as a “surprise”.

Red Bull began the campaign poised to cruise to the title as Max Verstappen’s four victories in the first five races saw it open up a considerable lead in both championships.

However, the Miami Grand Prix would come to be looked back upon as a turning point in 2024 as Lando Norris beat Verstappen to secure his maiden F1 win with McLaren.

Norris had relied on a well-timed Safety Car to seize the lead, but McLaren’s pace at the Miami International Autodrome would be a precursor to how the season would unravel.

The Woking-based squad soon became regarded as the benchmark team and took the Constructors’ title, capitalising on Red Bull enduring a dip with balance problems.

But while it experienced trouble with updates later on, Wache has revealed that Red Bull’s advantage being eradicated in Miami wasn’t down to altering the RB20.

Instead, Wache has attributed the sudden swing to McLaren making a sizeable step that provided an indication that Red Bull’s dominance had been brought to an end.

“We didn’t change the car; we didn’t change the way we set up the car, so it looked like it’s more the others that did a big change instead of us,” Wache told Motorsport.com.

“But to be fair, in Miami we should have won the race.

“However, we were not the quickest anymore. We were even, and clearly something changed in terms of what was done, especially by McLaren.”

How McLaren’s upgrades changed the landscape

McLaren had lagged behind Red Bull and Ferrari in the nascent races, but Norris’ triumph in the United States coincided with a considerable upgrade package on his car.

Having admitted that it had not addressed certain areas over the winter, McLaren introduced several revisions to the MCL38 which transcended the side’s performance.

“They were able to have less tyre degradation than everybody else, and their package seemed to work very well afterwards,” Wache observed.

“I don’t know what they have done; you have to ask them and not me.”

McLaren Miami gains a shock

Despite having conceded that it was anticipating a tougher battle in the opening rounds, Wache has expressed that McLaren’s marked step emerged as a shock.

“In Miami, we were more or less there, but during the race we saw that McLaren found the sweet spot in terms of their performance,” the Frenchman recalled.

“We were more surprised by the step of the others.

“Also, if you see what they have done [in development] it was not massive… it was more that the whole car came together, so it was a very big surprise.”
