Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur has revealed the team’s 2025 Formula 1 challenger will retain “less than one per cent” of the parts that existed on its SF-24 predecessor.
The Italian marque securing five victories wasn’t enough to banish its protracted title drought in 2024 as it missed out on the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren.
Ferrari began the recent campaign in encouraging shape as two victories and nine podiums in eight races saw it tipped to mount a challenge to Red Bull’s dominance.
However, Ferrari’s momentum stalled when new updates in Spain triggered accentuated bouncing which cost it vital points in the events preceding the summer break.
Ferrari launched an impressive revival, though, as upgrades at Monza inspired the team to take three more wins as it almost pipped McLaren to the Constructors’ title.
But while Ferrari was the highest-scoring team over the last eight rounds, Vasseur is under no illusions that it must make sizeable progress to go one better next term.
With McLaren having stated that it is taking “brave risks” with its car design, Vasseur has divulged that Ferrari has planned distinct changes for its own 2025 machine.
“If it will be competitive, we’ll find out in Bahrain,” Vasseur said.
“Sometimes you don’t realise you’re taking risks until afterward.
“The car will be completely new; I think we’ll have less than 1 per cent of the parts in common with the 2024 car.
“It’s a different project, but the same applies to everyone.”
Ferrari expecting ‘intense challenge’ in 2025
Vasseur reiterated his content with the evident progress that Ferrari made towards maximising more opportunities compared to his debut season at the helm in 2023.
But with the last season under the current regulations tipped to be a tight encounter, the Frenchman has admitted that another step on that front is essential for 2025.
“We can’t say now if 2025 will be our year, but I trust the project we’re working on,” he added.
“It will still be an intense challenge like the one we just completed.
“I am very proud of how we tackled difficulties this year, but we must take another step toward consistency.”
Hamilton to have ‘short preparation’ at Ferrari
Ferrari’s winter preparations will draw even greater attention this time around as the side has the much-anticipated arrival of seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton.
Vasseur has accepted that Hamilton, who will make his maiden outing in a Ferrari next month, will have limited time to adapt to his new side before the season starts.
“We are dependent on the weather, it’s not easy in January,” Vasseur addressed.
“It’s true that it’s quite emotional because I think he has this moment in his mind for probably 20 years.
“That means it will be emotional – but it has to be emotional for one lap and then to be focused!
“We will have the first test days with TPC [Testing Of Previous Cars] and Pirelli and then the launch of the championship first on the 18th [of February],
then the launch of the car on the 19th and then we will go directly to Bahrain and it will be a tough sequence until Melbourne.
“But it’s true that it’s a short preparation because we have something like four weeks at the factory before the first event, but it is like it is.”
