The Driver of the Year award is like the Hall of Fame award of Formula 1. This award is given to drivers who show exceptional skill and perform flawlessly across the season. This award can sometimes be confused with the Driver’s Championship, but they differ a lot. The Driver’s Championship is points-based, and the Driver of the Year award is an award that is voted by the top ten teams.

While the best non gamstop betting sites in the UK are popular for betting on Formula 1 markets like race outcomes and season-long statistics, the Driver of the Year award is typically not available for betting. This is because the award is voted by the top ten teams, which makes it more unpredictable and harder to analyse compared to other Formula 1 betting markets.

The voting and determination process for the Driver of the Year award involves an anonymous vote by all the teams. Every team will rank their top ten drivers for the season. It is a point vote similar to the race weekend scoring system. The top pick receives 25 points, and the last pick receives 1 point. This system ensures that drivers who perform exceptionally well over the season will get some recognition.

The unanimous choice

The unanimous choice for 2024 was Max Verstappen. He dominated the season with unmatched consistency. Verstappen also had some record-breaking wins like his recovery from 17th to first at the São Paulo Grand Prix, which defined his incredible season. His ability to maintain peak performance across varying conditions is a testament to his skill and focus.

However, the award isn’t limited to champion drivers. It acknowledges excellence across the spectrum, from veterans who continue to showcase their mettle to rising stars who prove their potential. This diversity of talent ensures that every outstanding driver is celebrated, regardless of their position in the championship standings.

This year’s standout performers…

While it was clear that Verstappen was dominating the season, there still were other drivers who also had some exceptional performances. For example, Lando Norris, who was the top 2 pick for the Driver of the Year vote, delivered his best season so far. He was on the podium continuously and got a decisive win at the Miami Grand Prix. Fans see Lando as a potential future world champion. Also, he had a significant role in McLaren’s historic Constructors’ Championship victory.

Charles Leclerc, Monaco GP
Charles Leclerc’s performance for Ferrari in in Monaco this year was one of the standout moments

Another remarkable driver this season was Charles Leclerc, who was the top 3 pick. He demonstrated his capability as Ferrari’s lead driver. His season’s standout performance was at the Austin Grand Prix, where he led a Ferrari one-two finish. Leclerc has the ability to extract maximum performance from his car, even under challenging conditions he was able to secure his place at the top.

Additionally, Lewis Hamilton who is seen as a veteran of the sport ended his lengthy winless streak by winning at the British Grand Prix. Also, emerging stars like Oscar Piastri displayed remarkable promise, helping McLaren achieve team success and solidifying his position as a driver to watch in future seasons.
