Adrian Newey was drawn to his upcoming role at Aston Martin thanks to a potent combination of two key factors, according to Formula 1 team owner turned pundit Eddie Jordan.

Newey will join Aston Martin next March as Managing Technical Partner, to oversee the Silverstone-based F1 squad’s technical operations.

The F1 design guru will also become a shareholder in the Aston Martin squad, which has designs on challenging for the world titles in the near future.

Eddie Jordan, who helps manage Newey’s business affairs, said that Aston Martin’s incoming engine partner Honda and new CEO Andy Cowell were pivotal in discussions.

“I think Honda being a partner from ’26 will be important to Adrian, because he believes to have a strategic manufacturer online is crucially important,” Jordan explained on the Formula For Success podcast.

No doubt, Honda’s involvement, which is one of many developments enabled by Aston Martin Team Owner Lawrence Stroll, will be beneficial to Newey given the titles shared with the Japanese marque at Red Bull.

In fact, Newey noted his reuniting with Honda during his unveiling as Aston Martin’s bright new hope, saying “I’ve really enjoyed working with them over the last six years at Red Bull. Great bunch of engineers, very easy to work with.”

Jordan continued, adding “to have Andy Cowell there, who we know – what a brilliant man. And he was the man behind all of those successes at Mercedes, [a] genius, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed that he’s obviously now in the fold with them.

“With Honda and with Adrian and with the people that he will get together, I have no doubt that it’s good.”

Honda powered Max Verstappen to his first Red Bull title in 2021 and the Milton Keynes-based squad has run the Japanese marque’s power unit ever since.

That will change in 2026 when Aston Martin enters its works engine partnership with Honda and Cowell as CEO also brings F1 engine expertise.

Cowell’s previous role was Managing Director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, a post he took in 2013.

He then oversaw the German marque’s dominance of F1’s hybrid era, helping power the Silver Arrows to seven conductive World Championship doubles.

Honda and Cowell are key ingredients as Aston Martin pitches towards fighting for world titles and Newey will only compliment that.

Moreover, a brand new wind tunnel will come online in the new year as development on Aston Martin’s 2026 challenger gets underway.

Newey will also have the benefit of reuniting with former Red Bull colleague Dan Fallows, now Aston Martin’s Technical Director.

The Aston Martin technical team will also be boosted by the arrival of Enrico Cardile from Ferrari, who joins as Chief Technical Officer in 2025.
