Former Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg has warned Aston Martin that they could become the sport’s equivalent of Paris Saint Germain Football Club.

Under the ownership of Lawrence Stroll, the Silverstone-based squad has made a number of high-profile signings, most notably Red Bull’s outgoing Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey.

The team has also signed Mercedes’ former engine boss Andy Cowell, and Stroll has overseen the building and opening of a brand-new HQ on the team’s Silverstone complex.

But Rosberg, 2016 World Champion, warned that Aston Martin needs to spend its money wisely to fulfil its ambitions of being a title-challenging F1 outfit, making the analogy to PSG to Sky Sports F1.

Nico Rosberg has warned Aston Martin they could become the “PSG” of F1

“Look at PSG, in soccer,” he said. “They had Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, all three at the same time. Three of the best soccer players of all time, and all the others were very good as well.

“And they never won the Champions League. Because, of course, it’s great to bring the greatest geniuses, the best managers on board.

“However, they still need to then gel, work together optimally, because you’re only as good as the whole team is collaboratively.

“Adrian Newey on his own is not going to be able to make that car a World Championship-winning car. He needs the rest of the team.

“Of course, he can give them a good direction, he can give very good guidance, but he still needs the team to excel with him.

“That remains to be seen. That’s going to be a challenge definitely for them to integrate and make that into a family that is all pulling in the same direction.”

Not only is Aston Martin able to boast new high-profile personnel, but it can also enjoy an exclusive power unit deal with Honda, that will come into effect in 2026, the year F1 will race under brand-new regulations.
