Verstappen coy on possible Newey F1 reunion at Aston Martin

Verstappen has been coy on a move to Aston Martin in F1.

Max Verstappen hasn’t ruled out the possibility that he could end up reuniting with Formula 1 design legend Adrian Newey through a potential switch to Aston Martin.

Aston Martin announced the news earlier this week that it has acquired Newey’s coveted services on a long-term contract once his Red Bull spell ends in March 2025.

The Briton will spearhead a star-studded technical team at a renovated Silverstone base which Aston Martin hopes will elevate it towards competing at the sharp end.

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has stated that Newey’s impending arrival will change the team’s mindset in the driver market amid rumours it could target Verstappen.

The Dutchman retains a deal with Red Bull through 2028, but he has become agitated with the drastic dip in competitiveness that has put his points lead under threat.

But while he hasn’t discounted that an Aston Martin move could be on the cards, Verstappen has suggested that his attention is on helping Red Bull reverse its slump.

“I have other worries at the moment that I’m paying a lot of attention to and I’m working on, so that is something maybe for the future that I think about. Not now.”

Verstappen has worked with Newey since being promoted to Red Bulls parent team in 2016.

The announcement that Newey would be departing his long-standing role at Red Bull prior to the Miami Grand Prix coincided with when the side’s level began to drop.

However, Verstappen has remained adamant when questioned that the Austrian outfit’s difficulties are unrelated to Newey’s lessened involvement in the F1 operation.

Verstappen, though, has admitted he wanted Newey to remain at Red Bull, citing that the Briton’s signing supports Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll’s desire to win.

“To be honest, that’s fine,” he replied when asked about Newey being confirmed at Aston Martin. “Adrian and I, we have a very good understanding.

“I sent him a message after the news came out – even though, of course, I knew that it was coming – so I’m happy for him. It’s a new challenge.

“Of course, I always said I would have loved him to stay, but at one point you cannot overturn these things, so then you’re just excited for people seeking new challenges.

“I also know that Lawrence, of course, is pushing flat out to make it a success with Aston Martin, so it’s quite understandable, of course, that he wants to have Adrian on his side.”
