Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has explained that Adrian Newey will be tasked with managing the Formula 1 team’s technical division in his new permanent role.
The Silverstone-based squad has announced that Newey will begin work as its Managing Technical Partner in March 2025 upon his contract with Red Bull concluding.
Aston Martin has won the race to sign the series’ most decorated-ever designer on a long-term deal as it aims to translate into a recognised championship contender.
Newey’s services, 65, will be integrated into a star-studded technical group, which will comprise Technical Director Dan Fallows and ex-Ferrari engineer Enrico Cardile.
Ferrari was touted to have been the initial leading contender to acquire Newey, but boss Frederic Vasseur revealed that a misalignment prompted talks to break down.
But while that enacted speculation about how active Newey would be in his next venture, Stroll has detailed that his latest hire will harbour permanent responsibilities.
“Adrian is joining as [the] Technical Managing Partner. He will be the leader of the technical team,” Stroll disclosed.
“He’ll be a leader also in the company and the overall business as a partner and shareholder. So I leave that structure up to Adrian, who’s much better suited than myself.”
He added: “As I mentioned we have a strong team, some of which Adrian has already worked with [Fallows at Red Bull]
“Adrian is going to be the technical managing partner of that team.
“So on a day-to-day basis he’ll be here full commitment, full time committed to Formula 1. Giving leadership and direction to his team.”
Newey’s arrival will coincide with work beginning on the all-new technical regulations coming in 2026, which will see Aston Martin partner with engine supplier Honda.
However, Stroll has admitted that securing Newey’s prized track record is the greatest statement that Aston Martin has made about its budding ambitions in the sport.
“There’s been many pieces as a puzzle from when we started six years ago to hiring the great management team we have today,” the Canadian added.
“To bringing in two of the greatest partners in the industry.
“We’ve brought Aramco to be our partner and they really are a partner. There’s no better partnership in the world than we have with Aramco.
“And to be able to bring Honda exclusively to work for us for the next five years after the new regulation starts. Our partners are also tremendously important.
“Adrian is key, key, key and the biggest part of the puzzle. Certainly from a technical point of view, from a leadership point of view. He will be leading the team.
“And I think that will have a trickle down effect throughout the whole organisation.”
