A bizarre incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the Formula 1 Safety Car crashed into the barriers at the Monza circuit ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
Regular Safety Car driver Bernd Maylander was taking the Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition for an initial run in order to complete safety and systems checks when the crash occurred.
On one of Maylander’s fast laps, the car skidded off at high speed and crashed heavily into tyre barrier at the Parabolica. Both Maylander and his passenger appeared to be unharmed as they exited the wreckage safely and were collected by the medical car.
It is yet to be determined whether the accident was caused by driver error or a mechanical failure on the car.
