Albon reacts to Sargeant’s Williams F1 axe

Albon has paid tribute to Sargeant following the American driver's Williams dismissal

Alex Albon has paid tribute to former Williams Formula 1 team-mate Logan’s Sargeant, following the American’s recent dismissal.

Sargeant’s seat at Williams was never assured through the entirety of the 2024 campaign, but a needless and costly crash during final practice put him on thin ice.

On Tuesday, Williams Team Principal James Vowles felt the time was right to part ways with the American – replacing him with Formula 2 Academy Driver Franco Colapinto for the rest of the season.

After one and a half seasons together at Williams, Alex Albon penned a tribute to Sargeant on social media.

“I know first-hand how brutal this sport can be and it’s tough to see Logan leave the team mid-season,” Albon wrote on his Instagram account.

“You gave it your all brother and it’s been a pleasure being team-mates with you.

“I know whatever you do next you’ll be awesome.”

Sargeant has lost his place at Williams.

Albon has routinely had the better of Sargeant across the pair’s time together at Williams, which constituted 36 Grands Prix weekends.

Last year, Albon scored 27 of the team’s 28 points – with Sargeant scoring the first and only point of his F1 career at his home GP in Austin, Texas.

That result made him the first F1 points-scoring American driver since Michael Andretti in 1993.

After a patchy and inconsistent 2023 campaign, Sargeant was given the opportunity to continue with Williams in 2024.

Vowles sought for the American to improve upon his rookie season but there had been little evidence to prove Sargeant had made a significant enough step.

“To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly,” Vowles said.

“But we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season.

A mid-season dismissal aside, Sargeant was set for the exit door at the end of this season regardless, with Williams opting to sign Carlos Sainz to a multi-year deal starting in 2025.

It is suspected that Sargeant will now turn to the American IndyCar season next year, with a potential seat at the newly formed Prema Indy squad.
