Max Verstappen has expressed concern that the technical issue which halted his running in FP2 at Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix could have further “implications”.

The Dutchman was among several drivers to post a lap on slicks once track conditions had dried up in the opening practice session to round out the top five runners.

However, Verstappen’s involvement in another rain-disrupted second practice hour would be curtailed with four laps on the board when he was forced back to the pits.

Verstappen had reported that he could smell smoke coming from his RB20 car and Red Bull would later divulge that an Energy Recovery System issue was the cause.

Having taken on several new power unit components, Verstappen, who ended FP2 down in 18th place, admitted the problem could have repercussions later this term.

“There was a suspected electrical issue so they told me to box and they’re investigating now,” Verstappen recalled.

“I haven’t been back in the garage yet, but I’m sure soon we’ll figure out what it is.”

He added: “It’s not ideal. I would have liked to drive more laps. Some other people had a few more laps in the dry, a few more laps now in the wet.

“It’s definitely not how I would have liked to get on in FP2.

“But I think it’s more important to just figure out what actually happened, and what kind of implications that will have for this weekend or the rest of the year.”

Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez would up 10th overall on the timesheets in the latter section, but he has conceded that the conditions provided inconclusive reading.

But with more showers on the radar this weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Mexican has expressed that it will be vital to nail the timing throughout qualifying.

“I think it was overall a very tricky day with the conditions that we had,” he expressed.

“I think it’s going to be very important tomorrow to be out there at the right time.

“We could see that already it was changing quite a bit if you were not pushing on the right lap, it could be quite a difference.

“We felt a bit the car, we have a bit of an idea on the car, but I think it’s very difficult to draw any conclusions on a track that was dominated by the weather, really.”
