Zinedine Zidane, French professional football manager and former player, has been named as the official starter for the 92nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15-16 June.

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest [ACO] has selected the Zidane as the official race starter to wave the French tricolour flag to begin the race at 4pm [local time] on 15 June.

As a sportsperson decorated with titles in the world of football, Zidane has claimed the likes of the World Cup, the European Championship, and the Champions League both as a player and a coach – in addition to the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1998.

Last year’s Centenary was ‘started’ by NBA star LeBron James, and so Zidane will take on the role to unleash a third consecutive record high of 62 entries at the fourth round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is beyond compare,” said Zidane.

“It’s an iconic race for anyone who loves motorsport, for people all around the world.

“It’s a source of immense pride for France. My head is full of images of the race, the legendary drivers, the amazing stories… although these pictures are all from the TV or movie scenes.

“To actually be there will be a first for me and needless to say, I’m extremely honoured to take on the role of starter.

“I can’t wait to be at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15 June.”

ACO President Pierre Fillon added: “I would like to thank Zinedine Zidane most sincerely for accepting the role of ‘Starter’.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a world-renowned event that, throughout its history, has welcomed some great names from many different horizons.

“Zinedine Zidane is an icon, a sportsman whose talent has inspired generations of fans.

“With a sporting line-up of unprecedented proportions, promising another historic 24 Hours of Le Mans, we couldn’t have hoped for a more prestigious ‘Starter’.”
