Wolff: Brown correct on approaches from Red Bull F1 members

(L to R): Zak Brown (USA) McLaren Executive Director with Toto Wolff (GER) Mercedes AMG F1 Shareholder and Executive Director. 08.03.2024. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 2, Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Qualifying Day.

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has agreed with the claim from McLaren CEO Zak Brown that there is evidence that states Red Bull members are looking to exit.

Red Bull announced last week that design legend Adrian Newey, who is F1’s most successful designer with 25 titles, would be departing the team at the start of 2025.

The Briton’s impending egress is reported to be tied to unsettlement at the environment within Red Bull since an internal probe into boss Christian Horner’s behaviour.

Brown admitted he was not surprised Newey had opted to call time on his near two-decade Red Bull stint and suspected that more individuals would vacate their role.

The American, 52, revealed that McLaren had received a multitude of CVs from current Red Bull employees amid the ongoing friction inside the Austrian outfit’s ranks.

“We’ve seen an increase in CVs coming in our way from the team and I think Adrian is the most successful designer of all time,” Brown said.

“So in addition to the technical that he brings to the racing team, people want to work for people like Adrian Newey and work alongside him.”

Zak Brown (USA) McLaren Executive Director celebrates with the team. 05.05.2024. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 6, Miami Grand Prix, Miami, Florida, USA, Race Day.

When asked about the comments that Brown had made earlier in the weekend, Wolff divulged that he had also been a witness to Red Bull engineers looking elsewhere.

“Yeah, so Zak is absolutely correct,” Wolff clarified. “We’ve seen Red Bull CVs through all of the levels.

“But I would say this is not anything out of the extraordinary. People change teams and want to change the environment.

“I’ve come to the point that I’m not really interested in what’s going on there [Red Bull] with the leadership. I’m not listening to anything anymore.”

However, Wolff insisted that he is fixated on improving Mercedes’ bleak prospects on track and recruiting the personnel that can help to overturn its flailing fortunes.

“I think it’s important for us to look at our team and develop the strong people,” the Austrian continued.

“And hopefully get some interesting, competent people from other teams onto Mercedes and provide an exciting journey to recovery.”
