Celebrated Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey has explained that his desire to pursue “new challenges” is the motivator behind his choice to depart Red Bull in 2025.
Red Bull announced on Wednesday that Newey had communicated his intention to leave the team he has helped deliver 13 championships to since arriving in 2006.
The Briton will attend “specific” races across the remainder of the ongoing season ahead of his planned exit from the Austrian outfit in the first quarter of next term.
Newey’s near two-decade spell with Red Bull has seen him become the sport’s most celebrated designer, with a combined 25 titles to his name in an illustrious career.
However, Newey has disclosed his intention to take up other opportunities elsewhere amid persistent rumours that Aston Martin and Ferrari are targeting his services.
“Ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars,” Newey said in Red Bull’s press release.
“My dream was to be an engineer in F1, and I’ve been lucky enough to make that dream a reality.
“For almost two decades it has been my great honour to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning Team.
“However, I feel now is an opportune moment to hand that baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.
“In the interim, the final stages of development of RB17 are upon us, so for the remainder of my time with the team my focus will lie there.”
Newey’s impending egress had been linked to claims that his relationship with Christian Horner had become fractured amid the investigation into the Red Bull boss.
Despite being exonerated from alleged claims of inappropriate behaviour, Horner’s continued presence has seen an apparent power struggle ensue inside the team.
