Misano E-Prix winner Antonio Felix da Costa has said that the timing of his first win since last season is right, given the nature of the speculation that has surrounded his future with Tag Heuer Porsche in recent weeks.
The Portuguese has been at the centre of gossip regarding his race seat being under threat, with the team testing Nico Müller accompanying a possibility of him partnering Pascal Wehrlein for next season. But da Costa put that behind him today, coming from 14th on the grid to win a hectic peloton race, the sixth winner in six races in Season 10.
When asked whether the win was, in some way, proof to those that have speculated about his recent results that form is temporary, but class is permanent, da Costa told Motorsport Week: “It’s not like: ‘Oh, they wrote some bad things about me, so I’ll go and win the race’!
“I’ll try and win every race, but it just happened at the right time.
“As I’ve said before, momentum has been building to this, maybe not a win but a podium here and there, in Tokyo we were fighting for a podium, so I’m not surprised and this has been the goal, and since São Paulo we’ve had a good momentum.
“But yes, timing is good for sure.”
Da Costa also told media that, despite the inevitable criticism from some circles that the heavily-pronounced peloton style race will bring, he is philosophical about it, saying: “I think it’s a question for the fans – if they enjoy it then…
“We are still learning as Formula E, I think tomorrow will be a bit less extreme, and we have to go back as a championship and look at it.
“If the fans at home and here are going crazy and enjoying it, I have nothing to say – change nothing.”
