The recent appointment of Bob Bell will help to elevate Aston Martin’s potential in Formula 1, according to Fernando Alonso.

Aston Martin announced last week that Bell has joined the team in the newly-created role of Executive Director.

Bell has a lengthy history in Formula 1, most prominently with the Enstone-based team, and was Technical Director during Alonso’s title-winning years in 2005 and 2006.

“It’s always good news when more people join the team, more experiences from previous years and from other teams, will bring to our already very sophisticated technical department,” said Alonso.

“I think that those kinds of senior role people, I think they bring always background knowledge about how to run a competitive team and how to have a good structure in the factory.

“So, I think the contribution of Bob hopefully brings Aston into a better level, and that’s the aim, so I’m happy to welcome him.”

Fernando Alonso (ESP) Aston Martin F1 Team AMR24. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 2, Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Friday 8th March 2024. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Aston Martin is still in the process of expanding, having last year vaulted from the midfield into regular podium contention, while it also opened its new factory at Silverstone.

“Always, when more people come to the team, there is not really any disadvantage, to be honest, there is always an advantage,” said Alonso.

“And the problem is to convince everyone to work together as a team and as a group.

“So, that’s the role also of [Group CEO] Martin [Whitmarsh], the role of [owner] Lawrence [Stroll] as a leader. I think we have a great technical group of people and great leadership as well. So, step-by-step, hopefully, creating a bigger team.”
