Silverstone will remain the home of the British Grand Prix through the 2034 Formula 1 season, an announcement confirmed on Thursday.

The British GP venue entered the 2024 season as one of only two circuits on an expiring contract, along with the Japanese Grand Prix Suzuka circuit.

Silverstone’s 10-year extension follows on from Suzuka extending its stay on the F1 calendar through the 2029 season.

The 5.8km, 18-corner circuit located in Northamptonshire played host to the inaugural F1 World Championship race in 1950 and is deeply embedded into the fabric of the series.

Silverstone also sits at the epicentre of the F1 fraternity, with Aston Martin’s headquarters based next to the circuit itself and Mercedes minutes away in the town of Brackley.

Red Bull’s Milton Keynes base is also in close proximity and the likes of Williams (Grove), Alpine (Enstone), McLaren (Woking), Haas (Banbury), and Visa Cash App RB (Bicester) all have either their main base or supporting bases of operation in the United Kingdom – meaning 1000s of jobs in the sport are supported by the UK.

The 10-year extension for Silverstone is a fit reward for the venue’s increasingly large crowds when hosting F1 – which grew to a record 480,000-weekend audience in 2023, with over 60,000 fans electing to camp in the local area.

“I am delighted we have secured a 10-year extension to host the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone,” said British Racing Drivers’ Club Chairman, Peter Digby.

“This contractual security will provide a solid base for the further development of the venue as we continue to improve and transform the circuit into a year round international motorsport and leisure destination.

“The 2024 Formula 1 season will start with 9 BRDC Full and Honorary members on the grid and the importance of our continued support of young drivers is particularly evidenced by the success of Lewis, Lando, George and Alex.”

Stuart Pringle, CEO of Silverstone added: “This long-term commitment reflects the importance of the British Grand Prix to Formula 1 and their acknowledgement of our ability to deliver a world-class experience for the British fans who are among the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable in the world.

“The cheers of support for the home teams, and particularly for the British drivers on the grid, makes the Silverstone atmosphere unique and I am looking forward to harnessing this passion for our sport and taking the event to the next level in the coming decade.”

“I am delighted to announce that the British Grand Prix will remain on the calendar for ten more years with this agreement,” said President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali.

“Silverstone is an iconic venue at the heart of F1 history and as it approaches its ninth decade hosting Grands Prix, the event continues to attract fans from around the world for fantastic racing on track and the amazing fan experience off it.

“I would like to thank Stuart Pringle and the Silverstone team for their hard work and dedication to take the British Grand Prix to new heights and I look forward to working closely with them as they look to further improve the facilities and fan experience over the next ten years.”

Once again this year the British GP maintains its now traditional summer place on the F1 calendar, with the teams and drivers visiting Silverstone on July 4-7.
