Magnussen provides update on Haas F1 future

Kevin Magnussen has provided an update on his Formula 1 future with Haas, suggesting he is no closer to signing an extension.

Magnussen’s current contract with the US-owned team expires at the end of 2023 after he rejoined it prior to the start of the 2022 campaign.

However, the Dane has largely been out-performed by team-mate Nico Hulkenberg this year, who returned in place of compatriot Mick Schumacher this year.

It has led to questions over Magnussen’s future with the squad, and team boss Gene Haas is set to be in Spa-Franacorchamps this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix.

When asked if he would seek out a conversation with him, Magnussen said: “We’ll see when it happens and how that pans out.

“I think at the moment there’s not any news to bring and eventually we’ll come around to it.

“I don’t really know what’s going on. I feel like the team is pretty happy but you never know with these things and I’ll take it one day at a time.”

Magnussen has scored two points to Hulkenberg’s nine so far this year, with Haas currently positioned eighth in the standings, tied on points with Williams.

On a handful of occasions this year, Haas has shown respectable speed in qualifying before slipping back on Sunday due to unfavourable race pace.

Magnussen, however, is confident that Haas has made inroads on its issues.

“I think we have made some progress,” he said. “It’s just that overall our performances have dropped compared to our main competitors.

“But qualifying versus race, I think that that has improved. Unfortunately, some of the cars that we used to be racing in the beginning of the year have just become much faster overall and that’s why we don’t see that gain so much.

“But yeah, as I said, we’re working super hard. The whole team is really working hard and I think there’s still reason to be optimistic for the remainder of the year.”
