Red Bull became just the fifth team in Formula 1 history to claim 100 grand prix wins after it triumphed at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, continuing its dominant start to the campaign.
The Milton Keynes squad has firmly lodged itself in the sport’s history books through its success over the last 20 years and looks to be on course to add even more trophies to its cabinet.
Red Bull is currently fifth on the all-time win list for Constructors, and it’s four of its current rivals that are tallying ahead.
But what teams have reached that feat, and where did they claim their 100th race win?
Ferrari – 1990 French GP – Alain Prost
Ferrari became the first team in F1 history to reach a century of race wins, and did so at the 1990 French Grand Prix through Alain Prost.
Starting from fourth on the grid with team-mate Migel Mansell on pole, it was the Leyton House car of Ivan Capelli who ran up front for most of the race.
However with three laps to go, Capelli conceded the lead to Prost as he had a misfiring engine, allowing Prost to take a popular victory in front of his home crowd while rewarding Ferrari with its 100th race win in F1. It would also mark the last race at the Circuit Paul Ricard before the sport returned to the venue in 2018.
McLaren – 1993 Brazilian GP – Ayrton Senna
Three years later, a dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix saw Ayrton Senna emerge victorious at his home race for the second time. Starting from third, Senna’s prospects were heavily dampened when he was issued a stop-go penalty for unlapping a backmarker under yellow flags.
However, wet weather chaos and a Safety Car intervention allowed Senna to bring himself back into contention and shortly after the halfway point, he overtook Damon Hill for the race lead.
It was Senna’s first win of the year, just over 12 months before his fatal accident at Imola. For McLaren, it was able to enjoy being the second-ever team to claim 100 wins.
Williams – 1997 British GP – Jacques Villeneuve
The famous 1997 championship battle between Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher was in full swing by the time F1 made its way to Silverstone for the British GP.
After taking pole position, Villeneuve was helped en route to the win as failures befell rivals Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen while both were in the lead.
Villeneuve won the race ahead of the Benetton duo of Jean Alesi and Alexander Wurz.
Mercedes – 2019 Mexican GP – Lewis Hamilton
It was some time before another team climbed into three figures, but the achievement went to Mercedes who had dominated the sport for several years prior to its 100th win.
Starting from the second row of the grid, Hamilton was in the wars on the opening lap as he took to the grass twice amid battles with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.
Mercedes executed a brilliant strategy to get Hamilton into the lead of the race and triumph over the Ferraris of Vettel and Leclerc, who started the grand prix on the front row. The second Mercedes of Bottas made an appearance on the podium and Hamilton took one step closer to his sixth F1 title (which he achieved at the following race in the USA) while Mercedes enjoyed a historic 100th win.
Red Bull – 2023 Canadian GP – Max Verstappen
Red Bull’s dominant 2023 season continued in Canada and in classic Verstappen style, the Dutchman dominated the race from start to finish.
Holding his position off the line, Verstappen ran ahead of Fernando Alonso and Hamilton and was kept on his toes as the pace of Aston Martin and Mercedes was notable, meaning any mistake would be costly.
Despite a dead bird being lodged in his right front brake duct and a scary moment over a kerb, Verstappen took his sixth win ahead of his fellow World Champions while Red Bull celebrated its 100th victory.
