Fernando Alonso says he hopes Aston Martin will “crush” Mercedes at the Canadian Grand Prix amid the arrival of fresh car upgrades.

After the recent Spanish Grand Prix, Aston Martin slipped behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship for the first time this year.

Aston Martin endured a subdued outing and took sixth and seventh-place finishes through Lance Stroll and Alonso respectively.

Mercedes, meanwhile, scored its first double podium of the season as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell crossed the line in second and third.

The Brackley-based endured a strong race after fitting major upgrades to its car at the previous round from Monaco.

Having had an impressive leap up the order for the 2023 campaign, Aston Martin sat in second place in the championship during the opening stages of the season.

However after the setback in Barcelona, Alonso is eyeing Aston Martin’s fresh upgrades to deliver a renewed push towards the head of the pack.

“After starting quite far back, I was able to recover – but only up to a certain point. Both Russell and Checo [Perez] were faster than us today, so there was a lot of work to do,” Alonso told SoyMotor.

“Looking at the Constructors’, it’s true that Mercedes gained some important points, but we again gained points on Ferrari.

“In Canada, we’ll bring more things, and in Silverstone too – It will all depend on which team is bringing updates.

“Even then, with a normal qualifying, we would have started alongside Hamilton and could have had some better chances.

“I think it’s just one race – and then in Canada, we crush them.”

Alonso currently sits third in the Drivers’ Championship after scoring five podiums in the opening seven races.
