Formula 1 breaks points record for first three rounds

All ten teams in Formula 1 have finished with points at least once, so far this season, making it the first time that every team has scored one point or more in the first three rounds.

Alex Albon’s P10 finish in Bahrain and Yuki Tsunoda’s P10 in Australia secured a single point for each of the bottom two teams in the Constructors’ standings while progress made under the new regulations by smaller teams such as Haas, Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin has meant that the midfield appears to be more competitive than ever before.

The 2023 season is the second season under the new generation of Formula 1 cars that were designed to improve racing and aid overtaking by reducing the downforce lost when running in the ‘dirty air’ coming off a leading car. The current season is also the third since the ‘cost-cap’ was introduced by the FIA in 2021.

In comparison, the first three rounds of the 2022 season saw every team claim at least one points finish in the opening three rounds, despite Aston Martin who suffered a difficult start to the season when they were forced to replace Sebastian Vettel with Nico Hulkenberg, at short notice, for the first two races of the season after Vettel contracted Covid-19.

The Silverstone-based team are currently second in the Constructors’ Championship, after the first three rounds, with a P3 podium finish in all three races for Aston Martin newcomer Fernando Alonso.

The 2021 season, a year before the current regulations came into force, saw Williams, Alfa Romeo and Haas all unable to finish with points in the first three rounds with Haas going on to finish the entire season without a single point.
