Overview: How is the F1 2024 driver market shaping up?

Although the 2023 Formula 1 campaign is still ongoing, there is already much focus on the 2024 season in relation to the driver market. How is the field shaping up?

Red Bull: The team is set to field the line-up of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez for the fourth year in a row, with the former tied down to a long-term deal. However, 2024 will mark Perez’s final year of his current contract, which will no doubt spark rumours regarding his future after next year.

Ferrari: Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will compete for the Maranello-based squad next season – in the final year of their current deals.

Mercedes: George Russell is locked in but there are question marks over Lewis Hamilton. His contract expires this year, but has asserted his commitment to the team on multiple occasions.

Alpine: The team has both Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon locked in, but the latter is entering the final year of his contract.

McLaren: Lando Norris has a deal in place until the end of 2025 while rookie Oscar Piastri is tied down on a multi-year contract – meaning both are safe for next year.

Sauber: The now-labelled Alfa Romeo team is expected to go back to being named Sauber next year ahead of Audi’s 2026 arrival. Valtteri Bottas is set to stay for a third season, while Zhou Guanyu’s contract expires this year. One hopeful that will be looking at his seat is Formula 2’s Theo Pourchaire, who is backed by Sauber.

Aston Martin: Fernando Alonso is on a multi-year deal and Lance Stroll is likely protected through family ties. Therefore, both stay in place for 2024 amid its form turnaround for the 2023 season.

Haas: The finer details of Kevin Magnussen’s contract are unknown, having signed on a ‘multi-year’ deal in 2022. Nico Hulkenberg is out of contract at the end of the year – but with no obvious onlookers and Haas seeking experience, it may well stick with the duo for another campaign.

AlphaTauri: With a plethora of Red Bull juniors occupying F2 seats, Yuki Tsunoda will likely have to impress Helmut Marko if he wishes to remain in an F1 drive beyond 2023. Rookie Nyck de Vries is believed to have signed with a two-year contract in place.

Williams: Alexander Albon is safe for next year, having signed a multi-year extension last year and the team will likely want to nurture their protege Logan Sargeant beyond a single campaign.
