However, his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez – a likely challenger for the top spot – slid into the gravel on his opening run and will line up right at the back of the grid.

In the Mexican’s absence, George Russell seized a spot on the front row, edging out his Mercedes partner Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
Alex Albon impressed to reach Q3 in the Williams, wounding up eighth overall.
But Oscar Piastri classified a disappointing 16th in his first qualifying session at his home event as both Alfa Romeo drivers also dropped out during the first segment.
