Aston Martin can challenge for F1 titles in ‘two, three years’ – Alonso

Fernando Alonso has backed Aston Martin to challenge for Formula 1 titles in “two or three years”.

Alonso has departed Alpine to join Aston Martin for the upcoming season on a multi-year year deal, having spent the last two campaigns at the French manufacturer.

The two-time World Champion rejoined F1 in 2021 with the hope of contending for a third title amid the introduction of new technical regulations.

However, at the age of 41, Alonso likely has just a handful of years left in the grid.

His decision to join Aston Martin came as a surprise to some – however the Spaniard says that he felt it was his best option for success, given there was no room at the top three teams on the grid.

“I love what I do,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. “Of course, I would like to have a car that can fight for the title, but there is no space for me there.

“Considering what there was in the market, Aston Martin is one of the teams who can achieve this in two, three years.

“It’s important at my age. I don’t have eternity ahead of me.

“If we end up being world champions, I will also be satisfied because I can say that I contributed to the construction of this title.

“I’m happy to embark on a new project and make it a success as soon as possible.”

Aston Martin is currently constructing a new factory at its base from Silverstone as its aims to climb to the head of the championship table.

Alonso will partner Lance Stroll at the team this year, who enters his fifth year with the squad, as he also raced with it when it ran as Racing Point.
