Hamilton to take F1 grid penalty at Italian GP

Mercedes has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will take a grid penalty at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix following a Power Unit change.

The seven-time World Champion will have a fresh engine fitted to his car for the Monza event, with the team still working to recover his third unit that was damaged at Spa-Francorchamps.

Hamilton was involved in an opening lap collision with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso at the Belgian Grand Prix, which saw his car crash to the ground with a severe hit after being pitched into the air.

It is expected that Hamilton’s penalty will exceed the 15 places that will see his penalty automatically change to a back-of-the-grid start.

“We will be fitting Power Unit number four this weekend for Lewis,” read a statement from Mercedes.

“This is because although we are still working on the recovery plan for Power Unit number three that was damaged in Spa, that unit cannot be run this weekend.

“This will come with associated grid penalties as it’s in excess of the allocation for the season.”

Hamilton ended last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix in fourth place, and he is still awaiting his first win of the 2022 season.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda is also set to receive a grid drop this weekend at Mozna after picking up his fifth reprimand of the year last time out at Zandvoort.
