Williams: ‘Obvious’ to give Sargeant FP1 outing this year
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Williams CEO Jost Captio says that it would be “obvious” to give Logan Sargeant free practice outings this season.

Sargeant is part of Williams’ junior driver academy, having joined the programme toward the end of the 2021 season.

The American driver took on a seat in Formula 2 with Carlin this season and has impressed, taking two races victories and a further two podiums so far.

It has led to speculation that Sargeant could be in contention for a race seat at Williams next year, amid question marks over Nicholas Latifi’s F1 future.

While Sargeant’s 2022 plans have not yet been announced, Capito says that he is keen to give him his F1 weekend debut this year.

“I think that [an FP1 outing] would be obvious,” Capito said. “We haven’t announced yet. Our young driver academy is working very well.

“We had three good results recently. Logan won the last two races and he set the car on pole yesterday, so I think he deserves to get into the car.”

This year, F1’s regulations state that teams must set aside two FP1 sessions during the year for young drivers.

Williams already ran Nyck de Vries in Spain earlier this season, but has not yet fulfilled its second race weekend under the mandate.

Sargeant’s F2 form has gathered momentum in recent weekends, placing him into title contention with five rounds remaining.

If he was to win the title, he would be unable to return to the series next year as part of the series’ regulations.

Capito hailed Sargeant for his recent F1 form, and says it would be a “great headache” for Williams if Sargeant won the F2 title.

“It would be a great headache wouldn’t it! I’ve had worse ones,” Captio said. “Of course we are impressed. You know, it’s his first season in F2.

“We didn’t put any pressure on him. So as I said, he has the time to develop and he’s really impressed us with how fast he has got to grips with the car, about the tyre management and getting results.

“How he got the pole [at the Circuit Paul Ricard] was really impressive. He will be in a Formula 1 car in the future, I’m absolutely convinced.”
