Revised regulations for Formula 1’s qualifying session will be trialled at two grands prix in 2023.

In the amended format the structure of the three-part qualifying session will remain unchanged in terms of duration and number of drivers eliminated at the end of each segment.

However in an alteration to the existing format drivers will have to run specific tyre compounds in each stage of the session.

Only the Hard tyres will be permitted in Q1 while only the Medium tyres will be allowed in Q2.

Drivers will then be permitted to run only the Soft tyres during the top 10 shootout for pole position.

Any specification of tyre will be allowed in case the session is declared wet.

Drivers will have a reduced tyre allocation for the two weekends in which the amended qualifying format is trialled, down to 11 sets from 13.

Of these 11 sets they will have three sets of Hards, four Mediums and four Softs.

Under the current format where 13 sets are allowed drivers have two sets of Hards, three Mediums and eight Softs.

The tweaked format was put forward by the F1 Commission in April and approved by the FIA during its WMSC gathering on Wednesday.
