Walkenhorst, Schubert to give M4 GT3 DTM debut

Walkenhorst Motorsport and Schubert Motorsport will each field a pair of new BMW M4 GT3 in DTM this year.

BMW’s latest GT3 challenger will make its series debut, having replaced the ageing M6 GT3 that was used with minor success last year. Marco Wittmann scored the car’s only two race wins in what was otherwise a challenging campaign for the Munich manufacturer.

Wittmann, a two-time DTM champion, has been retained by Walkenhorst Motorsport and will drive one of the team’s two cars in its expanded line-up.

For its maiden season in the series, the team only fielded a single car for Wittmann but has moved to add a second car for its sophomore campaign.

That second M4 GT3 will be piloted by new signing Esteban Muth, who joins the BMW stable after an impressive rookie season with T3 Motorsports.

In addition to Walkenhorst, the BMW stable has been bolstered by the addition of the Oschersleben-based Schubert Motorsport outfit.

The team founded by European Autocross champion Torsten Schubert has been affiliated with BMW for well over a decade, first racing Bavarian GT machinery in 2007 before receiving works backing from 2012 onwards.

Much like Walkenhorst, it will also field two M4 GT3s with factory driver Sheldon van der Linde and Philipp Eng set for driver duties.

Van der Linde will embark on his fourth consecutive season with BMW in DTM, having debuted in 2019. Last year, he raced with Rowe Racing alongside Timo Glock in what was a difficult campaign.

Rowe Racing announced earlier in the week that it would be focusing on endurance racing and will therefore not return for a second season, leaving Van der Linde to join Schubert instead.

His team-mate, Philipp Eng, makes his DTM return after a year on the sidelines. He debuted in the series in 2018, scoring four podiums and a maiden win in 2019. He did not take part in the first year of DTM’s GT3 ruleset .

Van der Linde and Eng have both already raced the M4 GT3,  teaming up with Wittmann to take part in the car’s North American debut during last month’s Rolex 24 at Dayona.
