Wehrlein takes pole for Mexico City E-Prix

Pascal Wehrlein took pole for the Mexico City E-Prix with a 1:07.100, beating Edoardo Mortara, who crossed the line sideways in the final ‘duel’ portion of the Formula E qualifying format. The Swiss driver will therefore start second.

The Porsche team, who Wehrlein drives for, had been all quick all day, but it had been Wehrlein’s teammate Andre Lotterer who was the quicker of the two up until the semi finals. However, Mortara knocked the German out in the semi final, meaning Lotterer will start third, directly behind his teammate.

Jean-Eric Vergne will start fourth, with Wehrlein knocking him out, setting the quickest lap of the weekend in the process, a 1:07.035.

Vergne also knocked his teammate, Antonio Felix da Costa, out in their quarter final match up. Da Costa, though, did manage to set the quickest time of those who were knocked out — just 11 thousandths slower than Vergne — and will start fifth.

Alongside him, world champion Nyck de Vries was knocked out by Lotterer in the first semi final, meaning he’ll be sixth on the grid for the race.

Robin Frijns and Stoffel Vandoorne will be on the fourth role, seventh and eighth respectively, after being knocked out by Mortara and Wehrlein.

Behind them is the drivers who didn’t make the cut for the duels.

Nick Cassidy will start ninth for Envision, with Maximillian Gunther alongside him in tenth. Mitch Evans was the fastest Jaguar in a disappointing qualifying for the team, so he’ll start 11th. Oliver Askew, continuing his impressive Formula E rookie year, will grid up in 12th, outqualifying his more experienced teammate Jake Dennis.

Alexander Sims will line up in 13th, with Lucas di Grassi in 14th, way behind his championship-leading teammate at Venturi. Dennis was only 15th fastest, with Oliver Rowland 16th for Mahindra.

Sam Bird will start 17th, with Nissan’s Sebastien Buemi, who was so impressive in practice, in a lowly 18th. Teammates Antonio Giovinazzi and Sergio Sette Camara will start 18th and 19th, while the Nio 333 teammates, Dan Ticktum and Oliver Turvey, will fill out the last row of the grid in 21st and 22nd.
