Formula E Diriyah E-Prix Race 1 winner Nyck de Vries will start race 2 on pole position for Mercedes EQ, taking an extra three points and putting him seven points at the top of the championship.

Edo Mortara will start the race alongside De Vries for the Mercedes-powered Venturi team, only five thousandths of a second slower than the Dutchman in the final pole position shootout.

The fastest non-Mercedes-powered car in qualifying was Robin Frijns for Envision Racing. Mortara’s teammate Lucas di Grassi will start fourth.

Andre Lotterer was fifth fastest, with Jean-Eric Vergne sixth. Vergne’s teammate Antonio Felix da Costa was seventh fastest but is under investigation for impeding Lucas di Grassi in their “duel”  round. Jake Dennis will start eighth, with Alexander Sims ninth.

Oliver Rowland received a three-place grid penalty for his incident with Frijns in yesterday’s season opener. So although he took part in today’s “duel” sessions after being third fastest in his group qualifying session, he’ll start tenth after being seventh quickest in qualifying.

Pascal Wehrlein will start 11th, with yesterday’s pole sitter Stoffel Vandoorne 12th after struggling in today’s qualifying. Sergio Sette Camara was 13th quickest for Dragon Penske Autosport.

Maximilian Gunther will start 14th, outqualifying his teammate Sebastien Buemi for the second time in a row. Oliver Askew was 15th quickest, again the fastest rookie, with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans in 16th. Buemi will start 17th, with Dan Ticktum 18th.

Ticktum’s Nio 333 teammate Oliver Turvey lines up 19th, with Antonio Giovinazzi in 20th.

Sam Bird crashed in qualifying, bending a wishbone, and didn’t complete group qualifying. He starts 21st, while Nick Cassidy crashed in practice 3 and his car could not be repaired time for the qualifying session, meaning he starts 22nd and last.
