Verstappen’s Virtual Le Mans quest ends with crash

Max Verstappen’s pursuit of victory at the Virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans has ended with a crash into the wall.

Verstappen and Team Redline were leading the race at the seven-hour mark and looked comfortable out in front, before a spin at the Ford Chicane sent the car into the barrier.

The 2021 Formula 1 World Champion was piloting the #123 entry at the time of the crash, leaving him and team-mates Felix Rosenqvist, Max Benecke and Atze Kerkhof out of the event.

“Endurance racing can be cruel sometimes,” wrote Team Redline on social media. “Nevertheless an incredible effort by everyone involved, the pace our #123 had out there was nothing short of spectacular. We’ll be back, we’ll go again.

Verstappen is known to enjoy sim racing and often spends his time away from the F1 track behind the wheel of his sim rig at home.

The race is taking place on rFactor, a popular racing simulator. You can watch it live here.

A number of professional racers are taking part in the race, including ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who has teamed up with his son Sebastian.

Alpine F1 star Fernando Alonso is not driving the event but is captaining the Alpine LMP squad in a non-participating role.
