Giovinazzi hopes to have ‘bad or good news’ soon

Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi has admitted it is “not easy” competing while question marks linger regarding his future in Formula 1 and hopes speculation will soon be at an end.

Just one vacancy remains on the 2022 F1 grid, with it being the second drive at Alfa Romeo alongside Valtteri Bottas.

Bottas has been signed to a multi-year deal, however the identity of his team-mate next year has not yet been confirmed.

Last month, Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur said that it would decide on its second driver in the next “couple of weeks”, but no public announcement has yet been made.

IndyCar’s Colton Herta had been linked to the seat amid Andretti’s prospective takeover of Alfa Romeo but his hopes are over following the breakdown of discussions.

Giovinazzi has raced for Alfa Romeo alongside the soon-to-be-retired Kimi Raikkonen since 2019, scoring a best result of fifth at the Brazilian Grand Prix during his maiden season.

Multiple drivers have been linked with Giovinazzi’s seat for next year, with Alpine junior Guanyu Zhou believed to be the favourite for the drive.

“There is no news yet, no answers,” Giovinazzi said ahead of this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix.

“Unfortunately it is like this, for sure it’s not ideal to come at the track, you don’t know what you will do next year or what will happen.

“But it’s like this. Hopefully we will know bad [or] good news soon so at least we know what will happen, it will better for everyone in the team.

“For sure it’s not easy, but there’s nothing I can do. The only thing I can do is drive fast in the car, bring the results. It’s not my decision, I think it’s more [a question] for Fred [Vasseur] than for me.”

Giovinazzi is currently on a 12-race run of finishes outside the points, the longest streak he has endured in his three-year F1 career to date.

The Italian ended the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this season in 10th, which remains his sole point-scoring result so far in 2021.
