Red Bull: Remaining tracks 50-50 between F1 title rivals

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner believes no circuit remaining on the 2021 Formula 1 calendar will overwhelmingly suit either squad.

The advantage has swung between Red Bull and Mercedes on several occasions throughout the course of a closely-contested season.

Red Bull has taken eight wins to Mercedes’ five so far in 2021 but Mercedes holds a 33-point buffer over its opponent in the Constructors’ championship.

Red Bull had regarded events in Italy and Russia as potential damage limitation exercises and opted to serve Max Verstappen’s engine penalty at the most recent event.

But Horner reckons neither Red Bull nor Mercedes can look at all of the remaining circuits with unbridled optimism.

“I don’t think there’s any circuits that stand out as strongly as Russia and Monza,” said Horner.

“For sure Mercedes will be strong, they won in Turkey last year, they’ll be strong there, but then we start getting [to] Austin we should be there or thereabouts.

“Brazil, Mexico we’ve always been strong, we don’t know anything about Qatar, we don’t know anything about Jeddah, then it’s Abu Dhabi.

“You could say it’s 50-50 in what’s left on the table in what favours slightly one more team than the other.”

Of the remaining venues on the calendar Mercedes won last year’s returning rain-hit Turkish Grand Prix and triumphed upon Formula 1’s most recent trip to Austin in 2019.

Mercedes won in Mexico in 2019, following two successive Red Bull wins, while Red Bull dominated in Brazil.

Red Bull Racing ended Mercedes’ hybrid era dominance in Abu Dhabi at last year’s season-ending event.
