Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, has opened up on her husband’s condition for the first time following his skiing accident in 2013, which left him with a serious head injury.
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion has not been seen publicly since his accident and his family have kept matters, including the status of his recovery, private, with little to no comment.
But speaking in an upcoming Netflix documentary on Schumacher’s life and career, Corinna shared some insight into how the 52-year-old is doing.
“Michael is here. Different, but he’s here,” she said. “That gives us strength, I find. He still shows me how strong he is every day.
“We live together at home, we do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond.
“And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.”
Schumacher, despite being a superstar during his F1 career, did his best to keep his family life private and out of the media, and Corinna says she is doing her best to replicate that for her husband.
“‘Private is private’, as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.
“I never blamed God for why this happened now. It was just really bad luck, all the bad luck anyone could ever have in their life.”
Their son, Mick Schumacher, currently races in F1 with the Haas F1 team and is currently in his debut season.
I was never a fan of his but I do wish this had never happened.
