Kimilainen takes Zandvoort pole in twice-red flagged session

Emma Kimilainen (FIN) Ecurie W. 03.09.2021. W Series, Rd 6, Zandvoort, Netherlands, Qualifying Day

Emma Kimilainen secured pole position at Zandvoort on Friday afternoon as she piloted her Ecurie W car to a best time of 1:34.326.

The Finnish racer pipped Alice Powell in the dying seconds of the session by just 0.074s to take the top spot, whilst championship leader Jamie Chadwick starts third, 0.257s down on Kimilainen’s time.

The session saw multiple red flags. The first came early on when Fabienne Wohlwend ran wide at Turn 3, launching her car over the outside kerb and into the barrier, causing heavy damage to the front of her car.

The session resumed and it was Chadwick who set the pace before Powell flew to the top of the times, only for a second red flag to pause the action once again.

Sabre Cook spun her car into the gravel, beaching it in the process. With the American unable to free herself, the session was once again red flagged and with only five minutes left on the clock, it was a dash to get a final flyer in.

Kimilainen’s final lap was good enough for pole, with Powell, Chadwick, Nerea Marti and Abbi Pulling completing the top five.

Jessica Hawkins lines up sixth, with Abbie Eaton and Sarah Moore completing the fourth row of the grid ahead of Belen Garcia and Miki Koyama.
